Review of the Agriculture Management Information Center , Report No. 95-36, February 1996

  • The Department's reliance on outdated information systems has hindered program operations. Most of the Department's current information systems are inefficient and difficult to maintain, and they need to be reengineered to support the Department's current business processes. The Department has initiated several projects to modernize its information systems. These reengineering projects will be costly and require a long-term commitment of resources. To ensure the efficient and effective implementation of these projects, the Department needs to conduct an information system reengineering study to guide its overall modernization efforts.
  • The Department also needs to establish a management framework that supports long-term information technology improvement. It should create an agency-wide information technology steering committee to increase management involvement and accountability. The Department should conduct regular customer satisfaction surveys to assess data center performance and designate a Chief Information Officer position. Finally, the Department should develop measures that assess the performance of its information systems.
