Review of the Division of Audits Within the Department of Revenue , Report No. 94-44, April 1995
- The Tax Audit Program has become more productive and efficient over the past five years. During this period, assessments from audits have increased from $122.4 million in fiscal year 1989-90 to an estimated $370 million in fiscal year 1994-95, an increase of 203%. There has also been a 160% growth in the amount of assessments actually collected by the Division during this period ($70.4 million collected in fiscal year 1989-90 to an estimated $180 million for fiscal year 1994-95).
- Although the productivity and efficiency of the Tax Audit Program has improved, we believe that tax audit recoveries could be further enhanced by increasing the use of automation in identifying and selecting taxpayer accounts and evaluating the effectiveness of audit selection strategies. These points were addressed in our 1985 performance audit of the Department but still have not been fully corrected.
