Special Examination of the Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences

Report 02-40, July 2002

Report Summary

  • The University of Florida is a land grant institution. IFAS carries out its land grant mission. Land grant institutions are responsible for teaching, research, and extension.
  • IFAS is funded from federal, state, and private sources. The state is the largest contributor to IFAS funding. IFAS is heavily dependent on state general revenue funds to support its activities.
  • Fourteen state agencies interact with IFAS to varying degrees. We found no evidence of duplication between IFAS and these agencies.
  • To be able to fulfill the broad IFAS mission yet reduce its need for general revenue funding, IFAS administrators should take additional steps to ensure that fees cover program costs to the extent allowed by federal regulations and consolidate program operations as feasible.
